Ra Superlative™ Standard

At Ra, we are committed to creating products which achieve the highest degree of excellence in quality, performance, and impact.

All of our products are developed under the careful direction of Dr. Alexander Wunsch (M.D., Ph.D.), the world’s pre-eminent expert in photobiology and applied phototherapy, {who has over 35+ years of clinical experience with light and light therapy.}

With Dr. Wunsch, we have developed a set of superior, proprietary standards for the quality and efficacy of blue light protection eyewear: the Ra Superlative™ Standard.

These include:

  • Wavelength-Specific Blue Light Protection: we utilize wavelength-specific LEDs to test for optimal blue light protection in the primary ranges of biological concern
  • Short- and Long-Term Stress Tests utilizing high-intensity blue and full-spectrum LED light sources directly on the lens to ensure that Ra Lenses can endure extreme conditions beyond any normal exposure—and that their protection will endure for a lifetime.
  • Careful Measurements of Color Rendering to ensure optimal color perception, usability, and visual comfort—balancing maximum protection with a superior wearer experience.
  • Extremely Calculated Selection of Lens Hue—drawing from Dr. Wunsch’s 35+ years of clinical application of color therapy to select hues which support and enhance our lenses’ desired physiological and psychological effects.

Benefits of Sunset

  • Align Circadian. Rhythm Reset your body clock

  • Boost Melatonin. Natural hormone production

  • Fall Asleep Faster. Drift off in minutes

  • Sleep Deeply. More restorative REM

  • Cellular Repair. Nightly regeneration activated

  • Wake Rejuvenated. Morning energy restored

How it Works How it Works

How it Works

Light that blocks rest

Evening exposure to LEDs, screens, and indoor lighting:

  • Suppresses melatonin by up to 90%
  • Keeps cortisol elevated when it should drop
  • Disrupts cellular repair processes
  • Creates dependency on sleep aids
  • Accelerates aging and disease risk

Light that supports rest

Ra Optics Sunset Lenses block 100% of melatonin-disrupting wavelengths, allowing your body to:

  • Wind down naturally without alcohol or sleep aids
  • Produce melatonin as evolution intended
  • Activate repair mode for cellular regeneration
  • Sleep deeper with more REM cycles
  • Wake refreshed with balanced hormones
  • Age slower through proper nightly recovery

The Science

At night, light from screens and LEDs can keep your brain in “day mode,” making it harder to slow down.

Sunset Lenses filter 380–540 nm—the wavelengths that send that daytime signal. Put them on after sunset, and your world instantly feels calmer. Your mind settles, and your body can shift into its natural nighttime rhythm.

Effortless, precise, and made to help you feel the difference.

When should I wear Sunset lenses?

Sunset Lenses are designed to be worn from sunset until bedtime, or at least three hours before sleep, for optimal results. They support your body’s natural circadian rhythm, the internal “clock” that synchronizes biological functions with the day-night cycle.

Historically, the setting sun triggered melatonin production, slowing metabolism and supporting cellular repair. Modern artificial light disrupts this process, signaling your brain that it’s still daytime, reducing melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep, and limiting restorative repair. Chronic disruption can contribute to fatigue and long-term health risks.

By wearing Sunset Lenses as directed, you help your body wind down naturally, fall asleep more easily, sleep more deeply, and wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

Will Sunset Lenses help me sleep better? Will they reduce eye strain?

Our Sunset Lenses are designed to filter the blue light wavelengths that stimulate the brain and body in the evening. By removing this sleep-disrupting light, Sunset helps the nervous system relax, supports natural melatonin release, and makes it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

By significantly reducing high-energy blue light exposure at night, Sunset also eases visual stress from screens and artificial lighting, allowing the eyes to recover during their natural repair window. For evening screen use, indoor lighting, or the final hours before bed, Sunset is the optimal choice for protecting sleep, recovery, and next-day energy.

Can I wear them during the day?

Sunset Lenses can be worn during the day, but their high level of filtration reduces light and color perception. This may make color-sensitive tasks more challenging and can cause drowsiness when alertness is required.

Recommended daytime use for Sunset Lenses:

  • In environments with intense artificial lighting, such as hospitals or offices.
  • Outdoors under strong sunlight, providing short-wavelength protection while retaining longer, near-infrared benefits.

Sunset Lenses were originally designed to enhance evening relaxation and sleep quality.

Daylight Lenses were developed for daytime use to filter blue light from screens and artificial lighting, and can also serve as a lighter evening option for those who prefer less tint.

Evening scenarios for Daylight Lenses:

  • Late meals, when color perception is important.
  • Ideal for social settings where natural color clarity and light protection are needed.
  • Nighttime driving.
  • Gradual transition to Sunset Lenses.

For optimal blue-light management, use Daylight Lenses during the day and Sunset Lenses at night—a complete system supporting both alertness and restorative rest.

Are these lenses too dark? Will I still see clearly?

Sunset Lenses are designed to simulate natural post-sunset lighting by significantly reducing brightness—blocking 77% of light and allowing only 23% to pass through. This reduction supports circadian rhythm alignment but can influence vision in low-light conditions.

Natural Vision Changes in Low Light
In dim environments, the eyes rely more on rod cells, which are highly light-sensitive but provide less sharp central vision, leading to slightly blurrier perception.

Pupil Dilation and Depth of Focus
As ambient light decreases, pupils widen, reducing depth of field and making it more challenging to maintain sharp focus—particularly with lenses that reduce brightness.

Reading Glasses OptionFor close-up tasks, consider Sunset Lenses with built-in magnification. These maintain circadian benefits while enhancing clarity for reading.

What wavelengths do your Sunset lenses block?

They exhibit a complete cut-off around 500 nm, with less than 5% transmission until approximately 550 nm. Allowing a small amount of light through this range enhances color perception and overall comfort, without transmitting enough short-wavelength light to disrupt sleep or circadian rhythm—the peak sensitivity of which is near 479 nm (the melanopsin absorption spectrum). Beyond 550 nm, transmission rises steeply, reaching near-full levels around 600 nm.

Easier time falling asleep

If you are having trouble falling asleep and cannot sleep in the dark these glasses are great. As soon as i put them on i start to yawn. They come with a cool box and a tube to carry in your pocket and a cloth to clean them. I recommend anyone not getting sunshine to try these.

The Village Sessions Were Right!

I have been an avid listener of Kori Meloy and The Village Session podcast. It wasn’t until they broke down the intention and design of Ra Optics glasses that I realized my Amazon “blue light blocker” glasses were duds. I am so happy with my Ra Optics purchase! I don’t feel guilty and I don’t worry about blue light at night anymore now that I have these. It gives me confidence in our modern world that I’m prioritizing my circadian rhythm while not missing out on screen time at night.
