Frequently Asked Questions

How does BlueSync work?

BlueSync was designed with the world’s leading photobiology expert to selectively transmit and filter specific wavelengths of light for desirable biological effects.

BlueSync filters UVA, UVB, and HEVL—short-wavelength light which causes damage to cells with prolonged exposure.

BlueSync selectively emphasizes long-wavelength blue light, with a peak transmission around 480nm, the exact range responsible for stimulating the circadian-rhythm-controlling cells in the eye. In doing so, BlueSync strengthens the body’s circadian rhythm, increasing energy levels, mood, focus, motivation, and performance.

BlueSync transmits the wavelengths of light associated with regeneration—red and near-infrared—shifting the balance of daylight toward protection and healing.

BlueSync offers the perfect balance of protection, activation, and healing—the first lens of its kind, and a revolution in therapeutic eyewear.

When should I use BlueSync?

Use BlueSync in the morning hours, and throughout the day, whenever you want a natural increase in energy, mood, focus, motivation, productivity, and overall physical and mental performance.

You can use BlueSync when you are out for a walk or a run, hiking, training, playing sports, or even just working.

BlueSync can be used indoors, but its effects are strongest in daylight (so if there are many large windows around, it will be more effective).

Discontinue use of BlueSync in the late afternoon, or whenever you want to begin to wind down for the day.

If you need to perform in the late afternoon or evening, you can use BlueSync at this time as well (but note that performing at these times of day will naturally have a disruptive effect on the natural sleep cycle and regenerative processes).

Who should use BlueSync?

Anyone who wants to feel more energy, increased motivation and focus, better sleep, and improved health and well-being.

How does BlueSync also improve sleep?

The circadian rhythm consists of two primary periods: wakefulness/activity, and rest/regeneration.

By increasing the amplitude of either phase of the oscillation, it will naturally increase the amplitude of the other. For example: by sleeping and resting more deeply, you have more energy to be active, focused, and to perform during the day, mentally and physically.

Similarly, anything that increases the peak amplitude of wakefulness during daytime will increase the depth and quality of sleep at night. Major factors that can amplify the circadian rhythm are light exposure, meal timing, temperature, and physical activity. BlueSync amplifies the light which increases the peak amplitude of the circadian rhythm, thereby also increasing depth and quality of sleep at night.

But isn’t blue light bad?

No, in fact, blue light is essential for optimal health and well-being. Blue light regulates the body’s natural circadian rhythm, which controls a variety of biological processes essential for overall health and well-being.

Blue light is only “bad” when it is unnaturally separated from the healing, regenerative part of the light spectrum (red and near-infrared), which is the case with modern artificial lights and screen devices. Sunlight contains a natural balance of wavelengths, so that blue light is balanced by healing wavelengths. Also, we naturally limit our sunlight exposure; but no one is limiting their exposure to artificial lights.

Additionally, blue light can be “bad” when we are exposed to it at an unnatural time. In nature, it is light during the day, and dark at night. Artificial lights at night, emitting blue light, “trick” the brain into thinking it’s still daytime, disrupting the release of the body’s most important anti-oxidant, anti-aging, anti-cancer molecule, melatonin.

BlueSync is designed to be used in the morning and during daytime to emphasize the specific wavelengths of light that strengthen the circadian rhythm, increasing energy levels, mood, motivation, physical activity, and overall health.

Some biohacking experts told me that sunglasses are bad and UV light is good for us. Is this true?

At Ra Optics, we agree that the mainstream health authorities and government stances on light are not exactly correct.

Considerable scientific evidence makes it clear that some quantity of UV light exposure, especially UV-B, is not only beneficial, but essential for the natural production of vitamin D, and optimal health. We recommend our customers ensure ample exposure to unfiltered, full-spectrum daylight—but in a highly intentional and targeted manner.

However, some modern health “experts”, especially in the biohacking world, have taken this too far, suggesting that more is always better, and advocating for maximum sunlight exposure.

This is dangerous advice and predisposes adherents to—at best—accelerated skin and eye aging and damage, and—at worst—increased risk of skin cancer and other related issues.

Indigenous cultures living in extreme solar environments made every effort to protect themselves from the damaging effects of excess sun exposure, which they could see and feel. For example, Inuit tribes living in Arctic climates fashioned “snow goggles” out of wood or bone to prevent snow blindness.

The incidence of cataracts is significantly higher in high-intensity solar environments like India, and especially in high-elevation regions like Nepal and Tibet.

Hence, intelligent protection from UV light is not only beneficial, but essential, especially in high-intensity solar environments.

At Ra Optics, we also acknowledge the risks of HEVL (high-energy visible light), which are almost completely ignored by the vast majority of existing sunglass products.

What is HEVL (high-energy visible light)?

HEVL is an acronym for “high-energy visible light”. Since ultraviolet light is invisible, HEVL refers to the range of the visible light spectrum which contains the most energy. These are the short wavelengths of blue light.

Similar to UV light, the high amount of energy contained in HEVL is capable of causing oxidative damage, damaging cells and tissues. The effect just occurs over a longer period of time.

By filtering UVA/UVB, but not HEVL, sunglasses can actually increase the risk of damage to the eyes, since someone can feel that they are protected, and spend longer periods of time in the sun, ultimately being exposed to dangerously high doses of HEVL.

HEVL is not only a concern from sunlight, but also from artificial light sources, because most people now spend extended periods of time under these light sources and staring at screen devices, every day.

For this reason (among others), all Ra Optics lenses offer maximal HEVL protection.

Shouldn’t we get unfiltered sunlight in the morning?

Yes, we recommend exposing yourself to unfiltered sunlight at sunrise, for approximately 10 to 20 minutes, to experience its many benefits.

At any other time of day, whether mid- or late morning, mid-day, or early afternoon, BlueSync offers a powerful increase in energy levels, mood, focus, motivation, and overall performance. By emphasizing the wavelengths of light that stimulate the circadian rhythm, BlueSync is able to offer these effects more quickly than exposure to unfiltered sunlight.

BlueSync offers unique benefits by filtering UVA/UVB and short-wavelength blue light (HEVL), which can be damaging in excess, while selectively transmitting the longer-wavelength blue light that strengthens the body’s circadian rhythm, and also transmitting the healing red and near-infrared wavelengths of light.

We recommend discontinuing use of BlueSync in the late afternoon, whenever you are ready to wind down (unless you need to perform in the evening).

How does BlueSync benefit jet lag, shift work, and hangovers?

Jet lag occurs when we travel long distances in short periods of time, especially by plane, because our internal biological processes become misaligned from the external environment. We may want to sleep during the day, and have trouble sleeping at night; feel tired and groggy; experience constipation and digestive discomfort, dehydration and so on.

BlueSync can improve symptoms associated with jet lag by helping the body clock to more rapidly synchronize to the new environment.

If you are a shift worker, you may experience effects similar to jet lag on a regular basis because your profession forces you to stay awake under the influence of artificial light through the night, and you end up needing to sleep during the day. BlueSync can help you to improve your circadian rhythms during daytime, increasing energy levels, alertness, and mood, even when the demands of your profession keep you awake late into or through the night.

Lastly, if you are up late at night, whether out and about or enjoying time at home, you may find that you wake up feeling groggy—especially if consuming alcohol. Natural effects of sleep disruption include impaired focus and memory, brain fog, increased stress, decreased performance (as well as many other internal effects, including disruptions to metabolism as well as hormone and neurotransmitter production). BlueSync helps to re-activate your physiology, so that you can function and feel better the day after a late night—and even give you the motivation to help make better decisions going forward.

Our scientific team has confirmed that colorless contacts do not interfere with BlueSync’s light-filtering technology, ensuring you continue to receive its intended protective and performance-enhancing effects.

BlueSync: vs Sunglasses. How does BlueSync differ from traditional sunglasses?

First, unlike traditional sunglasses, BlueSync is specifically designed, based on the science of light and circadian rhythms, to specifically “enhance” beneficial ranges of the light spectrum for particular biological effects—specifically: strengthening the circadian rhythm, increasing energy levels, mood, focus, and overall performance. Traditional sunglasses simply focus on blocking harmful UV and reducing all visible wavelengths, and generally not on selectively enhancing beneficial wavelengths.

Second, all Ra Optics’ products, including BlueSync, acknowledge the significant risk posed by high-energy visible light (HEVL)—an often overlooked range of light which, similar to UVA/UVB, causes disruption to eye health over extended periods of exposure. Unfortunately, the vast majority of modern sunglasses and eyewear products fail to meaningfully address the risks posed by HEVL.

In these ways, BlueSync is a revolutionary lens technology which both offers superior protection to traditional sunglasses, while offering a totally unique suite of biological benefits.

What is Blue Light?

Blue Light is a part of the light we see every day — from sunlight to light bulbs, car headlights, and screens.

What is Blue Light?

Blue Light from the sun is the signal that sets our body clock ("circadian rhythm"), which regulates nearly everything in our body—sleeping, waking, hormones, neurotransmitters, digestion, energy, growth, recovery, and more.

Blue Light is a kind of "short-wavelength light" (along with UV)—the part of sunlight that contains a high amount of energy. Too much short-wavelength light can damage our eyes and skin.

Modern artificial lights and screens emit large amounts of Blue Light.

DAYTIME: high exposure in our eyes and causes unnatural constant stimulation of stress hormones.

NIGHTTIME: because the brain can't tell the difference between sun and man-made Blue Light, it tricks the body into thinking it's still daytime, blocking the natural wind-down, sleep, and repair processes. And since sleep is essential, this disruption can have massive consequences on our health.

Why do we need to filter blue light?

Our eyes and skin evolved under jungle canopies, where leaves naturally filtered much of the harmful blue and UV light.

We can tolerate some blue light. But constant, unbalanced exposure is harmful. For most of human history, we limited excess sunlight naturally—seeking shade, wearing clothing, and living in harmony with the day-night cycle.

Modern artificial lighting and screens are different. They emit large amounts of blue light—without the balancing, longer wavelengths of sunlight that protect and heal.

That's why today, especially for our eyes—the body's most light-sensitive organ—filtering blue light is essential.

Why do we need to filter blue light?
Why do Blue Light Glasses exist?

Why do Blue Light Glasses exist?

Traditional sunglasses and optical glasses do not filter a meaningful amount of harmful blue light. Blue Light Glasses are a simple and effective tool to filter harmful blue light in both indoor and outdoor environments.

There are Blue Light Glasses designed for:

  • Daytime use, indoors: Daylight Lenses
  • Daytime use, outdoors: BlueSync
  • Evening use, indoors and outdoors: Sunset Lenses
